So much of Canada is burning, and so quickly, that the seed banks needed for
forest regeneration work could be stripped bare within years. But disappearing
forests won’t mean fewer wildfires, as repeatedly scorched land will become fireprone
grasslands and shrublands. If this summer becomes the norm, rather than
the exception, the ecosystems that humans depend on for clean water,
pollinators, and food will be altered—with unknown consequences.”
